Why We Love October Best

It’s hard to beat October in the Lowcountry. The summer humidity is behind us, but the days are still warm. Mornings are cooler, afternoons are comfortable, and you can spend hours outside. It’s the weather we wait for all summer.

October is especially nice at the Rhett House Inn. You can have your morning coffee on the veranda, take your time over breakfast, and head into town on foot. The gardens are still green, and by evening, it’s cool enough to sit outside with a glass of wine.

It’s a good month for exploring Beaufort, too. Downtown is an easy walk from the Inn, whether you’re heading to the waterfront, browsing the shops, stopping for lunch, or simply taking a walk through the historic district. And with the busiest part of summer behind us, things feel a little more relaxed.

That’s why we look forward to October every year. And we can’t wait to welcome you this fall.

Beaufort Ghost Tours

October brings one of Beaufort’s longtime traditions: the annual Ghost Tours organized by the Exchange Club of Beaufort, with proceeds benefiting CAPA Beaufort.

The 32nd annual tours take place October 16–18, 23–25, and 29–30, with both walking tours and horse-drawn carriage rides through the historic district. The walking tours begin at 7 p.m. at Cannon Park, while carriage tours depart from 1006 Bay Street beginning at 6:30 p.m. Walking tours last approximately one hour, while carriage rides run about 45 minutes.

Along the way, local stories bring some of Beaufort’s most talked-about legends to life, including the tale of Gauche, the spirit said to haunt “The Castle” on Craven Street. The annual event has supported CAPA through tour proceeds for decades.

There are a few other ghost tours in town, too. Tales of the Lowcountry offers walking tours that blend Beaufort history with local ghost stories and run one to two hours, while Beaufort Ghosts offers a one-hour evening walk through the historic district.

For guests staying at the Rhett House, the annual tours are an easy addition to an evening downtown. Have dinner, take in a tour, and stroll back to the Inn afterward.

Fireside at the Rhett House

Long before central heat, the Rhett House kept warm the old-fashioned way, and two of our original wood-burning fireplaces, in the Parlor and the Dining Room, are still lit and still used, just as they have been since the home was built in 1820. There’s something about a real fire, cracking quietly under a Greek Revival mantel.

A few of our upstairs guest rooms carry that same tradition, with their own original fireplaces for cooler nights. Several rooms in the Cottages have gas fireplaces, and the Newcastle House has a fireplace of its own, so there are plenty of places to settle in when the evening gets chilly.

If a fire-lit evening sounds like your kind of fall getaway, ask us about our fireplace rooms when you book. There’s no better place to read the last chapter of a good book than cozied up by the fireplace.
